The paper gives opportunities for undergraduate students studying across disciplines to develop their academic literacy skills.

The paper is divided into four modules:

  • Module 1: The building blocks of academic writing
  • Module 2: Key language functions
  • Module 3: Research, reading and referencing
  • Module 4: Essays and reports

The paper will be taught through lectures, in-person workshops and the use of Moodle.

HAM students are to attend the lecture and one workshop per week. Students are to attend the same workshop each week. Workshop groups are found below.

Students who successfully complete the paper should be able to:

  • Identify the purpose, topic, audience and underlying macrostructure of different text types associated with online and written academic communication.
