Paper Description

Edit Paper Description Content

The internship paper provides students with an opportunity to gain practical experience prior to entering the workplace and allows students to identify strengths and weaknesses via a reflective evaluation of their work. It is expected that you will need to link with at least one real organisation for the project.

  • Internships combine practical as well as University MyWIL support to help the student transition into the workplace.
  • Eligible students are responsible for finding an organisation that would be willing to supervise them as interns. There are projects available via MyWIL systems, alternatively, students can find projects via job-seeking sites or other networks.
  • Students will contact the potential internship host organisation in a professional and respectful manner and follow the paper resources on MyWIL and Moodle: A guide for finding and contacting the host organisation for internship placement.
  • When contacting a potential internship host, students should use WSOMM396 resources on Moodle: An example for a cover letter/email, a guide to the internship host, an example for a letter from the internship host, and a final evaluation form.
  • Once the internship is approved by the organisation, the student should register via MyWIL and upload the agreement form to Moodle based on a job/project description signed by a representative of the internship host organisation. Students should use the WSOMM396 Application for approval of the host organisation form (on the paper's Moodle page – resources). Once registered in MyWIL, the form is signed by the organisation, and is uploaded to Moodle, the internship could officially commence.
  • The agreement is expected to be completed by week 2. So early preparation is suggested.
  • The student will conduct internship in the host organisation, including at least 110 hours of work and other learning / training hours. In total it is to form an internship project with a minimum 150 hours of efforts, and possibly within 8 to 12 weeks. The majority of 150 hours should be within the dedicated trimester.
  • The host organisation will agree in advance to provide supervision and can choose to submit an evaluation to support the student intern. This can be done by adding it to the final report or by contacting the convenor directly. This evaluation feedback is optional for the hosting organisation.
  • Apart from the approval/agreement form, the intern will submit, over the trimester, three academic assignments reporting and reflecting on the progress and the contribution the intern has made.
  • If applicable to the host organisation, the intern will sign a written commitment to keep confidential all information that belongs to the organisation.
  • Assessment will follow the university trimester schedule for WSOMM396, internships should be mostly based on the trimester schedule while in some cases, students may commence earlier to contact the host to prepare for the internship.
