What this paper is about

Edit What this paper is about Content

This paper offers students the opportunity to complete a directed investigation of an approved topic relevant to an organisation/industry. To be approved, your topic should focus on a business problem or question related to your management discipline of study (major).

If you are unsure about your topic, please contact an academic staff member in your field of study (major) to discuss possibilities: (https://www.management.ac.nz/about/contact-info/our-people).

As soon as you decide to undertake a ‘99’ Research Investigation, you should enrol in the paper via MyWaikato. This will give you access to the detailed course information on Moodle.

You will then need to complete an initial proposal in MyWIL: https://wil.waikato.ac.nz/Default.aspx

Please contact MSC via email (msc@waikato.ac.nz) or in person if you need help with any of these procedures.

If you need more information before enrolling, please contact a subject convenor, who will provide you with initial advice on the 399 enrolment process.

For 2023 the subject convenors are:

SOMM

Associate Professor Eric Deakins (eric.deakins@waikato.ac.nz)

Associate Professor Joanna Scott-Kennel (joanna.scott-kennel@waikato.ac.nz)

SAFE

AccountingDr Kelly Hsiao (kelly.hsiao@waikato.ac.nz)
EconomicsDr Gazi Hassan (gazi.hassan@waikato.ac.nz)
Finance

Dr Martin Bai(martin.bai@waikato.ac.nz)

These staff can provide you with initial advice to get you started on your study.

Initial and Final Proposals

&

Ethics Approval

Prepare and submit an initial proposal via MyWIL https://wil.waikato.ac.nz/Default.aspx.

You will need to choose a topic and a company sponsor (a sponsor is only needed if you are NOT doing a desk topic study). If you are unsure of what is needed in the proposal, the convenor will be happy to assist you, or you can contact an academic staff member in your field of study (major).

Please note that it is a requirement that EVERY '99' student will collect primary data via survey or interviews, in addition to a secondary data set.

Once the initial proposal is approved, you will be assigned a supervisor and a second assessor for your investigation.

Make time to meet your supervisor, who will discuss your investigation and offer advice to guide you through the investigation process.

So that both parties have a clear understanding of the project, you will be asked to rework your initial proposal into a more detailed final proposal and email it to your supervisor (this is your Learning Contract).

You will also need to submit a research ethics application BEFORE you begin primary data collection via interviews or surveys (the ’99’ Student Guide in Moodle contains more information).
Liaise with your supervisor at least twice monthly via email to discuss progress and resolve issues with your investigation. (you should NOT contact the Second Assessor for advice)
Draft Report (due date is given below)

Submit your draft report via Moodle and receive constructive comments from your Supervisor and Second Assessor.

Note: The draft report does not carry any weight in your final assessment, but experience shows the better the draft, the better the final report.

Final Report (due date is given below)

Submit your final ‘99’ report via Moodle for grading

(Max. 6,000 words for a 399)
